I just learned this today, and went on the internet looking for cheap collapsible reflectors.
Unfortunately, I didn't want to spend $20 on something I could make myself for only about $2. So, I took an unexpected trip to Walmart and purchased a large sheet of white posterboard. I taped it to a large piece of cardboard that we already owned, and ta-da! My own reflector!
So... the importance of a reflector.
I realize I just said that. I said it again for emphasis.
A reflector will save you from unwanted shadows across the face, and brighten your subjects eyes and add catch lights to them. (Don't know what catch lights are? Let me google that for you.)
Here are some example photos so you can see the difference. The pictures on the left are with the reflector, and the right without.
So I hope all you photographers will go out and make yourselves a cheap reflector- it works magical wonders.

EDIT: I was asked who needed to hold the reflector while taking the picture. For closer headshots, I had Megan hold it angled up towards her face to let the light reflect. For farther shots, I held my camera in my right hand and the reflector in my left hand angled towards her. It would be easier to have someone else hold the reflector, but it is possible either way! :)
